Four stages from download to first lesson

Pick a stage to jump straight to it.

Before you start

What you need, and how it all fits

Have these ready

Gather these first and the rest goes smoothly.

  • Your licence key. It is in the delivery email we sent you.
  • One Windows computer to act as the Impero Server. Windows 10, 11, or Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025. Impero recommends it is not a Domain Controller.
  • Administrator access. Installing needs domain administrator access, so this is usually your IT person.
  • Disk space. About 5 GB to install and 120 GB free for data and logs.
  • A network connection (TCP/IP) between the server and your devices.

How Impero fits together

Three simple pieces:

Server
The brain. Installed once, on one computer. It holds your licence and settings.
Client
A small program on each student and staff device. It connects the device to the server.
Console
What teachers and admins use to see classes and manage them. There is one Client installer for everyone, and you choose who gets Console access.

Get ready

Best done with your IT person

A little checking now saves a lot of trouble later. These four checks are the most common reasons a first install goes wrong.

1.1 Check the server computer is big enough

Pick a Windows computer that stays on and connected to your network. The size you need depends on how many devices you will manage:

Devices to manageProcessorMemory (RAM)
Up to 1,5002.0 GHz dual-core4 GB
Up to 3,0002.0 GHz quad-core8 GB
Up to 5,0002.0 GHz eight-core8 GB

One server can hold up to 1,200 groups. Keep free disk space at least three times the size of the log folder, because logs grow over time.

1.2 Check the student and teacher devices

DeviceWhat it needs
WindowsWindows 10 or 11, 4 GB RAM, 5 GB free space
MacmacOS 10.14 or later, 4 GB RAM, 5 GB free space. Macs with Apple chips need Rosetta installed.
ChromebookChrome 110 or later, 2 GB RAM
iPadiPadOS 12.0 or later

Impero can monitor web browsing in Google Chrome (Windows and Mac) and Microsoft Edge.

1.3 Check your licence allows this version

You cannot install a version newer than your licence allows. Your allowed version is shown on the Licence tab in Impero Server. If you need a newer one, contact us and we will arrange it with Impero.

Do this before you install
Ask your IT person to add the antivirus exclusions below. Antivirus software that is not told about Impero can block it and cause confusing install problems.
For your IT person: antivirus exclusions (Windows)

In your centrally managed antivirus or endpoint security tool, add folder exclusions for:

  • C:\Program Files\Impero Solutions Ltd\
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Impero Solutions Ltd\

Only add the folders your devices actually use. If your antivirus needs individual files, the Client folder holds imperoclient.exe, ImperoClientSVC.exe, ImperoGuardianSVC.exe, ImperoServerBrowser.exe and others, and the Server folder holds ImperoServer.exe and ImperoServerSVC.exe. If your antivirus needs the full list of files, contact us and we will send it.

After saving, confirm the policy reached the devices, check the Impero services are running, and check the Client can talk to the Server.

For your IT person: network ports and addresses to open

TCP 30021ChromebooksImpero ServerMain connection for Chromebooks
TCP 30017ClientsImpero ServerAudio (Talk and Listen)

Screen-viewing port range: the range always starts at 30020 and ends at (number of devices x 2) + 20. For example, 25 devices means 30020 to 30070. If your network cannot use wildcard addresses, contact us and we will get you the Advanced Configuration Sheet.

Quick checklist

  • Server computer chosen and big enough
  • Devices meet the minimum
  • Allowed version checked
  • Antivirus exclusions added
  • Network ports opened

Install and register the server

You, or your IT person

You only do this once. It takes the longest to read and the least time to do.

1
Download the installers. Use the button below. It downloads one .zip file. Right-click it and choose Extract All before you run anything.
2
Run ImperoServerSetup8646.msi on the server computer. If asked to add .NET components, allow it. The installer adds the ones it needs automatically.
3
Open Impero Server from the Start menu. A registration window should appear.
4
Fill in the registration form. You will enter your school or organization name, a contact email, your licence code, and a password.
5
Finish registration. The server is now ready for devices.
V8.6.46 · 8 September 2026 · ZIP file, about 395 MB

What is in the download

Extract the ZIP and you will find three files. Each one has its own job:

ImperoServerSetup8646.msi
The Server. Install this first, on your server computer.
ImperoClientSetup8646.msi
The Client for Windows. Install it on each Windows computer, for students and teachers. It also installs the Console, which teachers and admins use to manage classes.
ImperoClientSetupMAC.zip
The Client for Macs. Open the zip to find ImperoClientOSX_8646.dmg, the Mac installer.

The same Client installer is used for both students and the Console, and you choose who can open the Console later. The number 8646 is the version, 8.6.46. Chromebooks and iPads do not use these files. They are set up through Google Admin and iPad deployment, covered in step 3.

Write down the password you choose
It becomes your Console Access Password. You will need it to sign in to the Console.
If registration will not work (offline activation)
1
On the registration window, open Advanced Settings.
2
Tick Cannot register Impero.
3
Select Register, then Go To Website.
4
Copy the text shown on the licensing page.
5
Go back to the registration window, paste it into the Paste box and select OK.
Where are the device installer files?

You will need the Client installer (an .msi file) for step 3. If it is not in the download you extracted, you can find it this way:

1
In Impero Server, turn on Download updates under Automatic Updates.
2
Under Tools, run Perform web check.
3
After a few minutes, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Impero Solutions Ltd\Impero Server\Updates.

Cannot find them, or your server is hosted by Impero? Contact us and we will confirm which version you need.

Add your devices

IT person, plus your Google admin for Chromebooks

Now put the small Impero Client program on every device you want to manage. Pick the type of device below. You can do them one at a time, in any order.

How to install Impero extensions (Browser and Cloud) (1:29)

Windows computers

Run ImperoClientSetup8646.msi (from the download in step 2) on the device with an administrator account.

Have many PCs? Your IT person can push it to all of them at once with Group Policy. The same installer works for teachers and students.

For your IT person: Group Policy steps
1
Put the installer in a shared folder every PC can reach.
2
In Group Policy Management, create a new policy (for example ImperoSoftwareDeployment) and choose Edit.
3
Go to Software Settings > Software Installation, right-click, and choose New > Package.
4
Select the Impero Client .msi using its network (UNC) path and choose Assigned.
5
Link the policy to the Organizational Unit that holds your computers.
6
The software installs the next time those computers restart.

If it does not install, check Event Viewer on the target computer.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are set up in the Google Admin Console, so this one is for whoever manages your Google admin account.

For your Google admin: step by step
1
In the Admin Console go to Devices > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers.
2
Click + and add the extension ID lpkffpnklfdjompeeodhpaeenfdpibmj (Education Pro Chromebook). Set it to Force install.
3
Go to Devices > Settings > Users & browsers settings and search for Bookmarks.
4
Add a managed bookmark named Impero Server whose address is your Impero Server IP address.
5
Turn off Guest mode and Incognito mode, and keep screenshots enabled, so Impero can monitor and show the live view.

Deploy to users, not machines. Give the server a fixed IP address, so the bookmark does not need changing.

Macs

Open ImperoClientSetupMAC.zip from the download. Inside is ImperoClientOSX_8646.dmg. Double-click it to open it, then follow the prompts to install the Impero Client. Macs with Apple chips need Rosetta installed.

Once a Mac has the Client, you can push other Mac software to it from the Console with the Deploy MAC tool. It accepts .pkg, .mpkg and .dmg files.

iPads

iPads need iPadOS 12.0 or later. For a single iPad, open the Impero install link on the iPad, then enter your server address in the app settings. For many iPads, use your device management (MDM) tool.

Ask your IT person to follow the iPad deployment guide. The install link depends on your Impero version, so use the guide for the exact address.

Chrome and Edge extension

The browser extension lets Impero log and filter web use in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, and it is needed for the web console.

Get the Education Pro Browser Extension, or have your IT person force-install it to all devices with Group Policy.

Only if you need it
Troubleshooting

A device will not connect to the server?

Once installed, a device looks for your server on the network by itself. In some networks (especially ones split into VLANs) that search fails. If a device does not show up in the Console, ask your IT person to use one of these:

For your IT person: three ways to point devices at the server

1. A DNS entry. Create a host record named impero_server that points to the server IP address. Only works if you have one Impero Server.

2. A text file. In the Client folder on each device, add a file named ServerIPFixed.txt that contains only the server IP address. Restart the Impero service or the device.

3. Group Policy. Set a registry value named ServerIP with the server address, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Impero Solutions Ltd\ImperoV3.

4

Add teachers and classes

Whoever runs the Console

Last, tell Impero who is in which class, and who is allowed to sign in. A group is simply a list, such as a class, a year, or a computer lab.

4.1 Make a group by hand

1
Open the Impero Console. A few default groups are already there.
2
Click the + icon above the group list. The Add Group window opens.
3
Give the group a name, choose User Group (people) or Computer Group (devices), and pick a priority. When rules conflict, the higher priority group wins.
4
Click Add New Member and type a name. Use * to add many at once (for example ITRoom1*), or ! to leave one out.

4.2 Bring in classes automatically

You can import from any of these, so you do not retype your rosters:

  • Clever
  • ClassLink
  • OneRoster
  • A CSV file
  • Google Classroom
  • Active Directory
  • A plain text file with one username per line (for User Groups)
Google Classroom tips
Each teacher syncs their own classes. Teachers must be a Teacher or Co-teacher of the class, and must be added to Console Access Rights. Up to 400 classes can be imported per person. Your IT person first turns the feature on in the Impero Enterprise Console.

4.3 Choose who can sign in

In Impero Server, open Settings and then the Console Access Rights tab to choose which staff can use the Console and which groups they see.

For the web console (edpro.cloud), people can sign in with a Microsoft or Google account. If you prefer email and password, an administrator can add users by email in User Management, and each person gets a link to set their own password.

Frequently asked questions

About Impero Education Pro
What is Impero Education Pro?

Impero Education Pro is classroom management software. From one screen, a teacher can see what every student is doing, keep the lesson on track, and help students without leaving their seat. It works across Windows, Chromebook, Mac and iPad devices, and runs on your own server. It also includes web filtering and activity logs, plus online safety alerts that flag certain keywords.

Is Impero Education Pro the replacement for Netop Vision?

Yes. Netop Vision has been discontinued and is no longer updated or maintained, because its parent company merged with Ativion, the maker of Impero. Impero Education Pro is the closest like-for-like replacement. It has the same core features, such as seeing every screen at a glance, locking machines and cutting distractions, so teachers can switch quickly with little retraining. Contact us and we will arrange your quote and a trial.

How does it help teachers in the classroom?

Teachers can see every student screen at a glance, show their own screen to the class, lock screens or switch off the internet when they need everyone's attention, and block or allow websites for the lesson. They can also message or chat with students and send and collect files. The result is less time policing devices and more time teaching.

Who is Impero Education Pro for?

It is built for schools, colleges and universities. IT directors and technology managers usually set it up and manage it, and teachers use it every lesson. It is a strong fit for computer labs, for business and technical classrooms running Windows, and for schools that have Windows labs alongside Chromebooks.

Why do colleges and universities choose it?

Colleges and universities often have large computer labs and a mix of devices. Impero works across Windows, Mac, Chromebook and iPad, runs on your own server, and connects to Active Directory. You can also choose which staff see which rooms and classes. Lab tools such as power management and inventory reports help IT keep many machines running.

Setting up
Do I need an IT person to install this?

Not for everything. Reading, registering your licence and making classes are things a teacher or office administrator can do. Installing the server and putting the Client on devices needs administrator access to your network, so that part is best handed to your IT person. Each step tells you who it is for.

Which computer should I use as the server?

Use a Windows computer that stays on and is connected to your network: Windows 10 or 11, or Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025. It needs about 5 GB to install and 120 GB of free disk space. Impero recommends not using a Domain Controller. For up to 1,500 devices a dual-core processor with 4 GB of RAM is enough.

Do I need to change anything on my antivirus first?

Yes. Ask your IT person to add Impero's folders as exclusions in your antivirus before you install. Antivirus software that does not know about Impero can block it, which causes confusing install and connection problems. The folders are listed in step 1.

Why will it not let me install the newest version?

Your licence decides which versions you may install, and you cannot install a later one until your allowed version is updated. You can see it on the Licence tab in Impero Server. If you need it raised, contact us and we will request it.

Where do I enter my licence key, and what is the password it asks for?

Your licence key is in the delivery email from Codework. You enter it in the registration window that appears the first time you open Impero Server. The password you create there becomes your Console Access Password, so write it down.

Do teachers, students and Chromebooks all use the same installer?

Windows and Mac devices, teachers and students alike, use the same Client installer. You decide who can open the Console in the Console Access Rights settings. Chromebooks and iPads are different: Chromebooks are set up through the Google Admin Console, and iPads through an iPad app or your device management tool. Step 3 covers each one.

A device is not showing up in the Console. What do I check?

Check that the Client is installed and the device is on the same network as the server. If it still does not appear, especially on a network split into sections (VLANs), your IT person can point it at the server using a DNS entry named impero_server or a small text file. Both options are in the troubleshooting box at the end of step 3.

Can I bring in classes from Clever, ClassLink or Google Classroom?

Yes. You can import from Clever, ClassLink, OneRoster, a CSV file, Google Classroom or Active Directory, so you do not have to type rosters by hand. With Google Classroom, each teacher syncs their own classes, and up to 400 classes can be imported per person.
